Study permit Canada Extension

Continuous Education In Canada

Stay In Canada

Extend Your Study Permit

Stay in Canada as an international student, by applying for an extension at least 30 days prior to the expiration of your study permit. If you have completed your studies, you must apply within 90 days of the last day of your studies. We recommend you to start preparing your application 2-3 months earlier. If your study permit expired, you must apply to restore your status within 90 days of expiration. If you have past the 90 days window, haven’t yet applied and want to study for more than 6 months, you must apply for a new study permit outside Canada. The extension application process is similar whether you are applying from within Canada or from outside of Canada. You will need to include proof of enrolment in a Canadian educational institution and evidence that you have the financial means to support yourself during your studies, and provide required supporting documents. You may continue to stay in Canada, study and work while you wait for a decision on your application.

Why Extention

The most common reasons For Extensions

1. Passport expired before the end of the study program

You must submit a new study permit application along with a new passport. You may submit your application online or by mail. If you submit your application by mail, you must include the processing fee.

2. Study for more than 1 year to get 3 years of Post Graduate Work Permit (PGWP)

Students who have opted to study for 1 year, i.e. 2 semesters of a study program, may realize that 1 year of PGWP is not sufficient, thus opt-in to study for 2 years or more at a DLI to qualify for 3 years of PGWP application.

3. Changes in the program of study (Update Your DLI)

If you need to change the program of study listed on your study permit, you must apply for a new study permit. You cannot extend your current study permit to make the change.

4. Need more time to complete their studies

Some students may not be able to complete their studies in time due to unforeseen circumstances and may need more time. You may apply for a study permit before your current permit expires along with a letter of explanation from your DLI’s registrar’s office or international student immigration centre.

An extension of your stay as a student may be granted if you have met the following conditions:

  • You have maintained your student status.
  • You have made satisfactory progress in your studies.
  • You still meet the initial criteria for admission to your program of study.
